Did you see the VH1 premiere of “The Pickup Artist”, a reality show where Mystery (a seduction consultant) and his boys school a group of clueless dudes? Some of Mystery’s manner, language, nonchalance, and even attire recall “Iceberg Slim” in the book “Pimp”, or “Silky” and “Dandy” in the underground classic “Gentlemen of Leisure”. A lot of pyschological turning-of-the-tables. We believe swagger may be taught, and that once acquired, it helps one in areas beyond the nightclub.

Two sentences that were not pickup lines stand out from “Gentlemen of Leisure”. One was a player’s reference to himself in the third person- “Kiss a pretty pimp’s thighs.” The other was a self-description- “I’m a relaxation junkie and a television fool.”
